A raised garden bed can run from a free afternoon with stacked plastic bottles to a Saturday hauling cedar 2-by-12s and laying pea gravel between boxes.
What decides which idea is yours is whether you need the bed to stay put or move: waist-high corrugated metal on a patio has different rules than a wooden box on casters chasing sun across a yard.
The four-foot working width shows up everywhere because that is about as far as most adults can reach into the center from either side without stepping into the bed and compacting the soil.

Concrete beds and brick paths do not happen by accident.
Four feet between beds lets a wheelbarrow turn around and keeps your knees from brushing tomatoes when you weed. Less space looks tidy in photos until you try to haul compost through it.

2. Cedar Raised Garden Beds

Cedar grays to driftwood color but the boards stay solid.

3. Pea Gravel Around Raised Beds

Pea gravel around beds gives you a clean edge and a place to kneel that drains fast after rain.
It costs less than pavers and spreads with a rake in an afternoon. Order more than the calculator says; settling and the odd overly enthusiastic wheelbarrow always eat a bag or two.
This gravel has a variety of uses including landscape and garden decoration, drainage, and building walkways.

4. Elevated Raised Beds

Waist-high corrugated metal beds mean no crouching to check basil or pull a stray weed.
The soil sits on a shelf; you fill only the top portion and storage or tools slide underneath. Good for backs, good for patios where soil underneath is concrete anyhow.
COMFORTABLE ELEVATED DESIGN: The 30" raised height reduces bending and kneeling, making planting, weeding, and harvesting easier on your back and knees

5. Arches Over Raised Beds

Metal arches spanning bed to bed turn a flat row into a tunnel for beans or cucumbers to climb.
Before buying, measure your bed length; an arch planted in gravel paths needs feet that reach solid ground or it wobbles in the first wind. String lights along the top rib if you want evening garden time without a flashlight.

6. Recycled Plastic Bottle Beds

Bottles neck-down into the soil make a bright, slightly wobbly wall that holds together better than you would expect.
Painting the outward faces brightens the whole bed, though any paint on the inside will flake off fast where water runs through.
Check your frost line; stacked plastic can heave and gape after hard freeze if the base is not set below it.

7. Mobile Raised Beds on Wheels

Casters under an elevated bed let you roll the whole garden to chase sun or dodge frost. A wooden box on locking wheels puts the soil up high and leaves open storage underneath for a watering can or spare trowel.
Check load before you buy hardware. A full bed of damp soil runs heavy; casters rated for the load are minimum insurance, and locking two of them keeps the thing from drifting down a slope.
I would set a flat paver under each wheel if the surface is soft; otherwise the legs sink and the box torques open at the joints.
Turning radius matters more than speed. A long box on small wheels pivots like a grocery cart with one locked caster; keeping the width narrow lets you spin it in place without knocking over the neighbor’s fence.

Soil Preparation Tips
Cardboard beats digging every time. I learned that the hard way after stripping sod by hand for 2 small beds; rain, blisters, and an entire Saturday lost for nothing.
Now I flatten the grass, overlap sheets of cardboard so no light slips through, and wet the whole layer so it stays put.
The grass underneath dies off in a few weeks and the cardboard rots into the soil it smothered.
If the ground slopes, scrape off the high side and rake it level before the cardboard goes down.
Rocks bigger than a fist come out; small ones stay and get buried. I do not till unless the soil is compacted hardpan; the cardboard layer plus the fresh mix on top is enough for roots to find their way.
The bed settles an inch or two in the first month, so I fill a little proud of the rim and let it sink.
【Size & Weight】The size is about 3/8 inch(6-9 mm). Total weight of a bag: 5 pounds. The mixed color gravels contains 5 colors: white, red, yellow, gray and apple green. The perfect size for succulent, cactus, vase or fish tank.

【Succulent Rocks】Jade rock size is about 1/4 inch ( 3-6 millimeter). Weight of a bag: 1 pound, smaller than expected in quantity. Great for small succulent and cactus plants as well as any type of vase or planter
Spacing Considerations
4 feet is the working width that matters. Less than that and you are squeezing past with a full wheelbarrow or brushing against plants with every pass.
Keep at least four feet between beds for access, whether the paths are concrete, brick, gravel, grass, or whatever surface runs between them.
Before the beds go down, I mark the corners with stakes and run a tape measure corner to corner to check the diagonal; matching diagonals mean square, no matter what the house line does.
A friend helps lower the frame so the balusters or base sit flat, then I set a level on the rim and scrape dirt out or pack it under until the bubble sits center.
Uneven beds drain to one end and dry out the other side by July.
If you are offsetting on purpose, measure once and eyeball the rest; nobody checks with a tape except you.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are some common mistakes people make when using raised garden beds?
Tight spacing tops the list. Anything under 4 feet between beds and you are brushing plants when you weed or stuck with a wheelbarrow that will not turn.
Another is skipping the level; an uneven frame drains to one end and the far side parches by midsummer.
What is the best layout for a raised bed garden?
Keep beds 4 feet wide or under so you can reach the middle from either side without stepping in and compacting soil.
Four feet between beds is the working width for wheelbarrow access; less looks neat in photos but fights you once plants grow in.
Square the frames by matching diagonal measurements before you set them, and level the rim so water feeds even.
What is good to put in the bottom of a raised garden bed?
Cardboard flat over the existing grass, overlapped so no light sneaks through, then soaked so it stays put.
I lay it after scraping the high side level if the ground slopes, and pull rocks bigger than a fist; small ones stay buried. No digging, no sod removal, no blisters.
